Things to Consider while Looking for a Curved Monitor for CAD

Now, I am going to tell you about those features and specs that need to be considered while buying a curved monitor for CAD. I have seen many times in my life that people buy things without even knowing their specs and features.

This type of negligence causes a lot of problems when they once bought the thing and then say that they are not satisfied. Or the thing does not bring those benefits that they were expecting.

In my opinion, it’s wise to know about the features and specs of the thing that we are going to buy, as it will help us to know about those specs that are necessary or that we want to work easily. Here are some requirements you should focus on when looking for the best monitor for CAD:

Resolution and Screen Size

With the advancement in time, everyone needs a screen that shows a clear image. Resolution means the number of pixels across the width and height of the image. The more pixels the clearer the image, and each and every small detail will be seen.

So, the question is what should be the resolution of the monitor?

The simple answer is that the recommended monitor resolution is at least 1080P HD quality. But in markets the curved monitors with even 1440p or even 4k are available. You have to buy according to your budget. Because even 1080p can work for you.

Screen Size

The next thing that needs to be considered is screen size. Every one of us likes a greater display and in markets 34”, 49”, and many other sizes are available. But here I will say that if the resolution is high,  an even smaller screen will work best for you. Otherwise, choose the size according to your budget. For CAD, 32 inches works best.

Curvature and Aspect Ratio

Monitor curvature is the measurement of how deeply a monitor is curved. Monitor curvature also determines the optimum viewing distance. Rather than models adhering to a “one size fits all” design philosophy, there are, in fact, several different curved monitor radius options to choose from. Each of these monitor curvatures differs slightly and appeals to different preferences and applications.

  • 1000R
  • 1500R
  • 2800R
  • 2300R
  • 3000R
  • 4000R

The ‘R’, in this case, stands for radius, while the number before it is the radius in millimeters.

It is said that 1000R is the curvature of the human eye that is optimal and is best. The other curvatures that are available are given above. But always keep in mind that those figures that are more related to 1000R are best. Like 1500R is better than 1800R.

Panel Technology

I came to hear that curved monitors can have other panel types, such as IPS (In-Plane Switching) and TN (Twisted Nematic) but on the contrary, I came to know, that VA panels are often preferred for curved monitors due to their unique properties and advantages.

VA panels are a type of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology known for their superior contrast ratios, better color reproduction, and wider viewing angles when compared to TN panels. While IPS panels can offer wider viewing angles and accurate colors, VA panels are in between TN and IPS panels, striking a balance between image quality, response times, and affordability. These characteristics make VA panels a suitable choice for curved monitors, ensuring an immersive and enjoyable visual experience.

Color Accuracy and Coverage

Color accuracy and coverage are also good in curved monitors. Curved monitors also tend to offer improved color and contrast as compared to flat monitors. The curvature of the screen helps to reduce reflections and glare, which can make colors appear more accurate.

Moreover, full RGB coverage should be there. Because of the full RGB coverage, the colors appear to be more accurate and attractive.

Ergonomics and Adjustability

As a CAD user, your monitor should be ergonomic and adjustable. The adjustable monitor allows the person to adjust its height, angle, and distance according to their own requirement. In other words, adjust your monitor according to your comfort. This will help to reduce stress on the neck and back. To bring such adjustability different stands are available in different monitors.

Make sure height adjustable stands, tilting stands and swiveling stands are present to adjust height, distance, and angles. So, if you are working for long hours then your monitor has to be adjustable.

Eye Care Features

It is one of the most famous sayings “Health is wealth”. The same in the case of eyes, eyes are more important than any other thing. So, it should be your priority. As I have stated, curved monitors reduce stress on eyes because of their curvature. Moreover, different features are available in different monitors. According to few there should be high contrast (high contrast means the black should be dark and white should be brighter). The suggested contrast is 60% to 70%. Thai contrast is good for eyes.

Moreover, refresh rate also matters, 120 Hz is optimal for the eyes. It will reduce stress on the eyes.

Multi-Monitor Setup

Curved screen is also good for multi-monitor setup. However, there are few things that should be kept in mind

Put one curved monitor on the middle of the desk while the other one should be towards the edge.

Make sure that there is less bezel in both the curved monitors. And if you want to get a wide view from the two curved monitors, you will need to tinker a little bit with your graphics settings.

Software Compatibility

Software compatibility is another thing that should be kept in mind. In the tech world, compatibility means the ability of software and hardware to work together without having to be altered to do so. This means that programs, devices and systems must interact with each other without issues arising. So, make sure it should be compatible with the CAD.

Hah, Now I’m tired and wouldn’t write much on things that everyone should consider I think you get the idea anyway. So let’s get started with the Pros and Cons OF CURVED MONITORSS!!!

Pros of Using Curved Monitors for CAD

As I have already mentioned before, curved monitors are good for CAD so, here I will talk about those specs that are better with using curved monitors than using flat monitors. The following are the benefits of using curved monitors for CAD.

Immersive Experience

In this era, we want to visualize our imagination. Immersive is a golden standard to work towards. The product should make you forget the world and take you into the world of your imagination through your screen. All this is the meaning of immersive. And to experience immersiveness the product should be engineered in a way like the real world.

In the real world we see length, width, and height. With all these three dimensions things appear to be real. Curved monitors take advantage of all three dimensions. Further, they expand on peripheral vision

Enhanced Perceived Depth

Enhanced perceived depth is another benefit of curved surface monitors. Depth perception is the visual ability to perceive the world in three dimensions and the ability to estimate the depth of an object from the source. So, curved surfaces offer this.

Reduced Distortion

Curved monitors are able to reduce distortions at the edges of the monitor and have a larger perceived field of view. But always sit at the maximum recommended viewing distance to have reduced distortions. One advantage of curved monitors is their ability to minimize visual distortion. Traditional flat monitors may exhibit slight distortions towards the edges of the screen due to the natural curvature of our eyes. In contrast to flat screen monitors, curved screens are designed to match the curvature of the human eye, resulting in a more uniform viewing experience.

Reduced Glare and Reflections

Curved screen monitors offer reduced glare and reflections as the curved surface does not reflect light as flat surface but if the source of light is one. And most of us usually use one source of light in our rooms.

Wide Viewing Angles

Of Course, the curved monitors offer wide viewing angles that are not available in flat screens. These monitors are immersive because of the wide viewing angles. The curvature creates a panoramic effect, allowing you to see more of the content displayed on the screen without having to constantly shift your gaze or adjust your head position.

Focused Viewing Center

Curved monitors have one focused viewing center. They also broaden the scope of peripheral vision and for better results sit in the center of the monitor.

Ergonomics and Comfort

A Curved monitor can also offer improved comfort during prolonged use. The curved screen matches the natural curvature of our eyes, reducing the need for excessive eye movement Additionally, the shape of the curved monitor can provide a more ergonomic viewing experience by minimizing the need to turn your head, providing for a more comfortable posture.

Aesthetic Appeal

Now it is my own opinion that curved monitors look more aesthetic than the flat ones. And multi monitor setup of curved monitors add a spice to the environment. They look amazing as well as professional. The look of your setup will be totally aesthetic when there is a curved monitor setup.

Cons of Using Curved Monitors for CAD

As there are many benefits of curved shape monitors there are a few disadvantages also, few of them are:

Text and Line Distortion

Curved monitors are immersive at showing the pictures and graphics at the same time lines and text get distorted due to their curvature. So, this thing is considered as a negative point.

Viewing Angle Challenges

Flat screen is almost the same from all the sitting angles. But in the case of curved screens, you have to face viewing angle challenges. You have to sit in the center of the screen to have a good view.

Multiple Windows and Interfaces

Opening multiple windows and interfaces is not going to give you the same immersive experience. Because the display is split into two parts, the visuals after opening multiple windows are not the same.

Distortion of Rectangular Objects

As I have stated the lines and text get distorted due to curvature. Similarly, the rectangular objects in CAD also get distorted because of their curved screen. As New users, you might face difficulty handling it.

Cost of the curved monitors is also higher than that of flat monitors. These are expensive and are not budget-friendly most of the time. For example, the pioneer of curved monitors, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is just just just around $1,299 while flat monitors come at around $300.

Desk Space

Curved screens will almost always take up more desk space, meaning you need to be sure before you buy that you have the space to accommodate a larger screen.

Personal Preference

Personal preferences also matter; many people don’t like curved monitors and are satisfied with flat ones. Though there are many advantages to a curved surface, if your personal preference is a flat surface then go for it.

Tips For Optimizing Curved Monitors For CAD Work

Following are the tips to optimize your monitor

  • CPU performance is the key.
  • The speed at which CPU is running should be optimal
  • Determine the proper graphics profile.
  • Optimize the OS and profile management
  • One option for profile management is FSLogix, which is free in most Windows 10 licenses.
  • Select the right storage
  • Select the right network
  • Set the right protocol policies
  • Use display quality and disable unnecessary features, disable background processes

Comparing Curved Monitors To Traditional Flat Monitors For CAD work

Cad is used for visualizing your imagination in the real world. Curved monitors offer an immersive experience whereas traditional flat monitors can not offer such experiences.

Curved monitors allow our eyes to take everything in one glimpse while flat monitors don’t do so. Curved monitors broaden the scope of peripheral vision and reduce the strain on the eyes while flat monitors can not do so.
